There is a warm welcome awaiting you from all the staff at the Coletta & Tyson Garden Centre, Woodmansey, Beverley. We focus on delivering you innovation, quality, service and value, all year round.
Coletta & Tyson is a second-generation horticultural family company established for over 70 years. We are proud of our Italian and East Yorkshire heritage and humble beginnings, that are traced back to allotments on Golf links Road, Hull. The garden centre started off as a market garden where the allotment grown fruit and vegetables were sold to the local community. We then developed into the outlet garden centre bringing you great value on our nursery surplus. We have steadily grown and established the Coletta & Tyson Garden Centre gathering our knowledge and expertise along the way to bring you the best garden centre experience.
We strive to be as green as we can with many of our plants coming from our own local nurseries. For more information about our Environmental Policy click here.
As part of our commitment to customer service and offering only the best quality plants we offer a 5 year plant guarantee on all our hardy container grown plants. We therefore guarantee all our container grown hardy nursery stock plants for five years. A hardy plant is one that will withstand a normal UK winter outside e.g. Silver birch. This therefore excludes all bedding plants, all houseplants and half-hardy shrubs e.g. pittosporum. If you feel your plant is not thriving then please contact our plant team so that we can advise you.
John Coletta's father Louigi died from bronchitis in 1925, when John was 14. John’s own son Louie joined the family business and increased the number of grocery shops to six. John grew tomatoes, cut chrysanths, bedding plants and other fresh items for those shops in allotments at Golflinks Road, Hull. During the second world war John worked in the fire service and was awarded the George Medal for his part in saving the William Wilberforce Museum. He donated the medal to the museum where it can still be seen today and the story of his bravery was included in “The Boys ’Book of Heroes”.
Brian Tyson was born and bred in East Hull. Brian played for Hull Kingston Rovers throughout the 1960’s and for Great Britain. He played at Wembley in 1964 against Widnes. Brian Tyson married John Coletta’s daughter Barbara in 1962 and began to help his father-in-law on the allotments.
In 1964 at the age of fifty John had expanded from one allotment to over forty. That year the opportunity to buy the original market garden in Woodmansey arose (now the Coletta & Tyson Garden Centre). Brian and Barbara had John in 1964 and Paul in 1967. After a serious knee injury, Brian retired from rugby in the late sixties and went into partnership with John on the market garden.
Today the two son's John & Paul run Coletta & Tyson with 400 acres of wholesale nurseries & the garden centre, both businesses still retain the family values that were established 70 years ago.
